How to ask for Google reviews without being awkward

Reviews decide the map results and most businesses hate asking. Here is a way of asking that works, feels normal, and takes thirty seconds after each job.

Short answerAsk the same day, by text, with a link that opens the review box, in your own words. Reply to every review. One or two a week, every week, is what moves you up the map.

Recent Google reviews are the single biggest factor in whether you show in the map at the top of a local search. Most businesses know this. Most still have eleven reviews, the newest from two years ago, because asking feels awkward. Here is how to make it not awkward.

In your Google Business Profile, there is a “Get more reviews” button that gives you a short link. When someone taps it on their phone, the review box opens with your business already selected. Save that link somewhere you can copy it from in two seconds.

Without the link, you are asking people to find you on Google, find the reviews tab, and work out where to click. Most give up.

Ask the same day

The best moment is when the job is done and they are pleased. Not a week later. Not in a newsletter. That afternoon, by text.

Use your own words

Do not send a template that reads like it came from head office. Something like this, in your voice:

“Thanks again for today. If you were happy with the work, a quick Google review would really help me out, it makes a big difference to a small business. Here’s the link: [link]. No worries if not.”

That last line matters. It takes the pressure off and, oddly, gets more reviews.

Do not ask for five stars

Ask for a review. Asking for a rating is against Google’s rules and it puts people off. Happy customers give five stars without being told.

Reply to every review

Every single one, within a day or two, in your own voice. “Thanks Sarah, the new boiler should see you right for years.” It shows the next reader that a real person runs the business. Replies also count towards how active your profile looks.

Reply to the bad ones properly

You will get one. Do not argue. Say you are sorry they were unhappy, say what you have done or will do about it, and offer to talk. Keep it short and calm. The next customer reads that reply and decides you are reasonable. A good reply to a bad review is worth more than the bad review costs.

Make it a habit, not a campaign

Twenty reviews in one week looks bought. One or two a week, every week, looks like a busy business with happy customers, because that is what it is. Put the link in your phone. Send it after every job. That is the whole system.

If you want it done for you

On our care plan we send the review request for you after each job. You tell us who, or we connect it to your invoicing so it goes out automatically. It is one of the six things included every month.
